Types of Lead Acid Batteries

Last Updated on June 22, 2021

You are an off-roader or owner of a vehicle whatever it is always recommended to know about every important part of your vehicle. The battery is one of the most important parts. A vehicle without a battery is like a human without a heart. Without a battery, it is impossible for a vehicle to make any movement.

Whatever, today in this article I am going to tell you about the types of batteries, more specifically about the types of lead-acid batteries.

Types of Lead Acid Batteries

1. Flooded Lead Acid Batteries

The flooded lead-acid battery is the first and oldest lead battery. The flooded battery comes with plates that are submerged in an electrolyte consisting of about 35% sulfuric acid and 65% water by volume.

However, two different types of flooded lead-acid battery exist in the market

They are – 1) Maintenance-free and 2) Serviceable.

Maintenance-free batteries are the batteries that need no care. In a maintenance-free battery, there is no access cap for adding water if the water level becomes low. On the other hand, The serviceable batteries are those that have a removal access cap that can be removed to add water if the water level becomes low. Without this, more cleaning terminals and equalizing charges are also needed for a serviceable flooded lead-acid battery.

The flooded lead-acid battery made for engine starting, traction, uninterruptable power systems, deep cycle, marine and aircraft.

2. Sealed Lead-Acid Batteries

Sealed Lead Acid Batteries are acquainted also VRLA that stands for ‘Valve Regulated Lead Acid’. Plates and thickness of plates are the primary forms that are used to manufacture the sealed lead-acid batteries. The Sealed lead-acid batteries are the safest batteries as it does not degrade so easily. However, there are two different types of Sealed lead-acid batteries available.

They are – 1) Absorbed glass matt Which is known as AGM and 2) Gelified Electrolyte which is called GEL.

Absorbed glass matt (AGM): The Absorbed glass matt(AGM) battery is the best Sealed Lead Acid battery. These AGM batteries come with the glass which is made of micro-fiber. with this micro-fiber glass, this battery will provide maximum efficiency as it boosts the highest energy with the lowest internal resistance. AGM batteries are used in UPS, mobilities vehicles, telecommunication industries and so on.

Gelified Electrolyte(GEL): The Gelified Electrolyte batteries are similar to the AGM batteries as the electrolyte is suspended, these batteries are technically different as the AGM battery is considered to be a wet cell. The GEL cell usually contains a silica type gel that suspends the electrolyte in a paste. This battery can be shipped with any standard courier as this is made up of gelified material. These Gelified Electrolyte batteries are used for emergency lighting, wheelchairs, small UPS and ventilators for healthcare purposes.

3. Standby Lead Acid Battery

The standby lead-acid batteries are specially designed for standby use or as backup energy. You can guess about this battery from its name. The standby battery is being used especially for the standby applications which doesn’t require heavy loads like an Alarm system, Power supplies without any interruptions, Telecommunication and Network Systems.

4. Marine Specific Battery

Marine batteries are designed with a high power system for taking huge stress. Marine batteries can be cranking, deep cycle and a combination of both. The marine batteries are equipped for marine conditions specifically labeled as the Marine grade
